How are we during the Covid Curfew in Mumbai |
There is no doubt that everyone is impacted by the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Although it could be easy for middle and upper-class people to stay at home, most of the poor in India must earn their living through daily labor. Mr. Rajendra is a parent of one of our students. He described how difficult the situation has become for them. He used to earn a wage of Rupees 300 ($ 3.97) daily. Since the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak in India at the beginning of March, his income has dried up. “So, I started feeding my kids rice with chutney, made of crushed onions or tomatoes,” he says. His daughter Aprita is in 8th grade and a student at Ainiti Learning Center. This lockdown has had adverse effect on her studies. “Aprita helps her mother with chores and then just sits idle, wanting to go out and play with her friends and come to Ainiti.” Now they survive with whatever donations they receive. They pray this problem gets resolved soon. |

The Principal at the one of our local schools let us know that families are hungry and starving as a result of the Mumbai curfew. The Ainiti team and our volunteers rushed to aid the students and families in need. We loaded a truck with about 1,500 pounds of rice, flour, sugar, salt, and lentils and 50 liters of cooking oil to deliver to these starving families. This helped serve 50 of our families that have been impacted by the Mumbai curfew. We are so thankful to these volunteers for helping the students at Ainiti and their family during this difficult time.

What's been going on with Ainiti... |
During the first quarter of 2020, Ainiti worked on new ways to boost the student's abilities by organizing new courses. The introduction of the new Spoken English Course was a positive way to kickstart 2020. We have come up with a new activity: Story & Poetry Writing. Every student is given a topic and gets a week to compose a story or poem. Once the students arrive at Ainiti they get to narrate their story or poem to the entire class. Putting this activity in practice will eventually be a game changer for the kids as this will free them of stage fright, help them with their communication skills, develop good body language and ultimately enhance their vocabulary and overall personality. We also give them project work every week. The whole class was divided into 4 groups and we gave them 2 topics to work on (i) Components of a computer (ii) I love Ainiti. We were thrilled with the output we received. Students came up with such beautiful 3D models. This activity helps the kids evolve their research skills and instill team spirit and help them learn from each other while having fun. The new Spoken English Class is the latest addition to our line of courses. We feel very happy and confident to have launched this course. This will be very useful and productive for the kids. Students have shown great interest and a lot of people have enrolled for the same. |

The students are very enthusiastic about the arts and crafts. They have given us their paintings as parting gifts. They also try to learn new painting techniques when they get a chance to operate internet. With the addition of Google Translate to our new advance course, the girls have been very eager to try and learn new languages, especially Japanese, Chinese & French. In December, Ainiti hosted its first ever Christmas party. It was a blast and our most successful event to date. Each child was involved as they brought handcrafted materials to decorate the Ainiti classroom and Christmas tree. Students were excited to decorate the classroom and enjoyed the party.

Fiza Khan is 13 years old, currently in 8th grade. She lives with her parents. Both of her parents are laborers working hard every day to provide good living for their family. Both of them are uneducated yet they want Fiza to make the difference and earn the highest degree possible. She studies in a Municipal School (Govt Aided). Fiza performs well in her studies and works hard for every task that comes her way.
“I'm glad that I've been selected for the newsletter and all thanks goes to my mom and dad for supporting me and to all my teachers for always helping me out. Ainiti has been such an amazing experience, getting a chance to use the laptops myself has made the difference for me. I wish that I can always be a part of Ainiti and also participate in every new course which comes up.” -Fiza Khan
